Of help to jazz and blues fans are the club listings in the free weeklies: Bay Guardian, SF Weekly and East Bay Express. The Sunday Chronicle covers major happenings, especially jazz and blues concerts and festivals.

There are a number of traditional jazz clubs and societies in the Bay Area, each holding Sunday sessions, usually in Moose Halls or Elks Clubs. Trad or Dixieland fans can phone the New Orleans Jazz Club of Northern California for Bay Area Trad Jazz activities (661-9893).

KCSM-FM 91.1 (650-574-6586), the only 24-hour strictly jazz station in the Bay Area, plays music ranging from up-to-the-minute hipitude to big bands to Twenties classics to Latin jazz and blues. DJs, and a mix of college talent and pros keep listeners abreast of club dates, concerts.

Jazzwest.com features monthly news and feature articles plus artist profiles, CD reviews, free classified ads and a comprehensive calendar of jazz performances around the Bay. Also on the site’s JazzWest Directory, artists, clubs and concert halls, festivals, educational groups and jazz-related businesses promote their work directly to jazz fans.

This brochure was written by Phil Elwood, the late dean of Bay Area jazz and blues critics. It was updated, where needed.
